Although social phobia is characterized by being uncomfortable in public places or in a crowd, this condition is very different from being shy. A person who is shy may feel anxious or embarrassed when in public or speaking in public.

Another cause of the social phobia is thought to be related to the amygdala. The amygdala is the part of the brain that controls thoughts or feelings of anxiety and regulates responses to fear. Social phobia can occur when the amygdala is overworked.

Actually, people with social phobia realize that the fear and anxiety they experience is excessive, even unnatural. However, most of them don't know how to solve it.

There are several ways to deal with social phobia, including:

1. Medical treatment
The use of drugs to treat social phobia must be as directed and under the supervision of a doctor, because they cannot be used carelessly. Several types of drugs that are commonly used are paroxetine or sertraline.

In some sufferers, the symptoms of social phobia can be reduced by regularly taking medication. However, some other sufferers may not feel better by taking these drugs. In fact, symptoms can appear again when drug use is stopped.

2. Psychotherapy
Other treatment methods that can be used to treat social phobia are cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). The therapist will help the sufferer recognize fear and train them to turn fear and anxiety into more pleasurable feelings.

Patients will be trained to realize that this situation really does not need to be too feared and anxious. This therapy begins by exposing the sufferer to a mildly uncomfortable situation, then gradually increases it.

3. Relaxation therapy
In this therapy, patients will be taught breathing and meditation techniques. Thus, sufferers can also do simple relaxation at home so they feel more relaxed and over time social phobia can heal.
